What do we know about the sales development in the main category “Grocery”?
In Germany “Grocery” is one of the categories with the lowest online share of all retail categories – namely 1.4% in 2019.*
2019 showed a relatively stable demand with a slight increase in Q4.
When the pandemic hit, people shifted from buying groceries in stores to online shopping (66% yoy growth) and in 2021 the yoy growth was 22%, slowly declining throughout the year. Taking a look at 2022, it started out with a negative growth of -7% yoy, which is about 65% higher than in 2020 though, i.e. 65% above the pre-COVID demand.
